How WheyIn Works
Your guide to understanding WheyIn: what we do, why it helps you choose better protein powder, and exactly how our ratings are calculated.
What Is WheyIn?
WheyIn is a community-driven platform for discovering and comparing protein powders. Instead of relying on marketing claims or a single reviewer, we aggregate real reviews from real users who have tried the products. Every rating you see comes from people who have bought and used the protein—rating taste, mixability, how easy it is on the stomach, and value for money.
We cover whey, plant-based, casein, blends, isolates, clear whey, and more. You can browse by brand, filter by protein type or flavor, sort by what matters most to you (e.g. “easy on stomach” or “best taste”), and read detailed reviews before you buy. Our goal is to help you find the best protein powder for your goals and your gut.
Why Should You Use WheyIn?
- Real reviews, not ads. Scores are based on verified user reviews, not brand partnerships or single “expert” opinions. The more reviews a product has, the more reliable the rating.
- Transparent scoring. We explain exactly how the overall score is built: from taste, stomach feel, value, and mixability. You can see each component and decide what matters most to you.
- Filter by what you care about. Need something easy on the stomach? Sort by “Easy on Stomach.” Want the best-tasting whey or the top plant-based options? Use our filters and quick tabs to narrow down the list.
- Compare brands and products. Browse by brand, compare flavors and types side by side, and read written reviews to understand texture, sweetness, and real-world experience.
- Save favorites and get personalized recommendations. When you sign up and create your Gut Profile, we can tailor recommendations to your preferences and digestive sensitivity, so you spend less time guessing and more time training.
How Is the Overall Rating Calculated?
Every product has an overall score from 0 to 5. This number is not a simple average of all reviews. We use a weighted, Bayesian-smoothed formula so that scores are fair, transparent, and stable even when a product has only a few reviews.
What reviewers rate
Each review includes four core ratings (1–5 stars):
- Taste – How good the product tastes (flavor, sweetness, aftertaste).
- Easy on stomach – How it feels digestively (bloating, comfort, gut tolerance).
- Value for money – Whether the quality justifies the price.
- Mixability – How well it dissolves (smoothness, clumping, texture).
How we weight the overall score
We combine the average of each dimension into one overall score using fixed weights that reflect what users care about most:
- Taste: 35%
- Easy on stomach: 30%
- Value for money: 20%
- Mixability: 15%
So a product with great taste and stomach feel will rank higher than one that only mixes well but tastes average or is hard on the gut.
Bayesian smoothing: why new products aren’t punished
If we used a plain average, one 5-star review would give a product a perfect 5.0, while a product with 50 reviews might sit at 4.2. To make scores comparable and fair, we use Bayesian smoothing. We pull new products slightly toward a neutral score (3.0) until they have enough reviews. Specifically:
- We treat the product as if it had at least 5 “prior” reviews at 3.0 (neutral).
- The formula is: (reviews × raw average + 5 × 3.0) ÷ (reviews + 5), then rounded to one decimal.
- With 0 reviews, the score is 0 (not shown as a top pick). As more people review, the score moves toward the true average and stabilizes.
So a product with 2 reviews averaging 4.5 will show a smoothed score (e.g. around 3.9), while a product with 30 reviews at 4.5 will stay close to 4.5. This keeps rankings honest and prevents gaming with a single review.
How to Use WheyIn
- Browse and filter. Use the home page to see proteins ranked by overall score, taste, easy on stomach, value, or review count. Filter by protein type (whey, plant-based, casein, etc.) and flavor (chocolate, vanilla, etc.) to narrow the list.
- Search. Search by product name, brand, or flavor to find a specific powder or similar options.
- Explore brands. Visit the Brands page to see all brands we cover and jump to their product lists.
- Read product pages. Each product has its own page with the overall score, breakdown by taste/stomach/value/mixability, written reviews, nutrition info, and where to buy (with regional pricing when available).
- Leave a review. Signed-in users can rate products they’ve tried. Your review updates the product’s averages and helps others decide. One review per user per product; you can edit it anytime.
- Create a Gut Profile. Sign up and tell us about your preferences and digestive sensitivity. We use this to personalize recommendations so you see products that are more likely to work for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Where do the reviews come from?
- All reviews are submitted by registered WheyIn users who have tried the product. We do not scrape or import reviews from other sites without attribution; when we use external consensus (e.g. Reddit summaries) for products with few reviews, we label it clearly.
- Can I trust a product with only a few reviews?
- Our Bayesian smoothing pulls new products toward a neutral score (3.0) until they have more data. So a product with 1–2 reviews will not show an extreme score. For more confidence, look at products with 10+ reviews and read the written reviews.
- How often are scores updated?
- Scores are recalculated automatically whenever a review is added, updated, or removed. There is no delay—the overall score and category averages (taste, stomach, value, mixability) always reflect the current set of reviews.
- What does “easy on stomach” mean?
- Reviewers rate how the product felt digestively: whether it caused bloating, discomfort, or digestive issues, or whether it sat well. This is especially useful if you have a sensitive stomach or have had problems with other proteins. You can sort the entire list by this criterion to see the top-rated options.
- Is WheyIn free to use?
- Yes. Browsing, searching, filtering, and reading reviews are completely free. Creating an account and leaving reviews are free.
